DVD Recorder Shipment Eyeing Three Million Units in 2004
June 30, 2004
- With retail prices falling rapidly, the arrival of the second half peak sales season, and a series of international sporting events, Taiwanese DVD recorder shipments are anticipated to elevate, challenging three million units in 2004.

If Taiwanese makers are successful in reaching three million units in 2004, they would comprise the world's second largest supply base of DVD recorders. At present, Japanese makers collectively account for nearly 50% of global volume, followed by European makers with 10%, and Korean and Chinese makers with 6% to 8% each.

The gains expected for 2004 have also been driven by strong first half shipments. From rapid growth in the North American and European markets coupled with Taiwanese companies increasing their ability to secure key components, Taiwanese makers are estimated to have shipped over one million units in the first half of 2004.

Pushed by large-scale shipments, shipment value in the first half of 2004 is estimated to reach US$220 million, growing 15-fold year on year. However, affected by price reductions of DVD loaders and MPEG-2 CoDec (Encoder Decoder), ASP is on its way to a near-50% decline in the second half of 2004, compared to approximately US$280 in the first half of 2003.

Taiwanese DVD recorder shipments reached over 700,000 units in the second half of 2003, giving shipment value a total of US$140 million, and growing spectacularly from US$14 million in the first half of 2003. Shipment volume in the first half of the year was approximately 50,000 units.
